Experience : Being the Client!

BEING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LENS!

    I have much to say!

I just got back from a shoot where I was the client!! It was most fun! But lets rewind a couple of weeks…

Lately I have given my site a little overhaul and my images which were the ol’ self portraits in the mirror trick just don’t reflect me really. So I called in the professionals! I booked my friend from Available Light Ltd.
I chose Steph for her style… colourful, light & fun which is just what I wanted the images to reflect.

Anyhoo, once we sorted out the hows and where and the cost etc it was a matter of waiting! eek, This is where I have been struggling really. We had to cancel the first booking because I was having some kind of  headcold/sinus thing last week and looked terrible! No need to add salt to the wounds! Anyway, over the last few weeks I have been looking at myself in the mirror.. noticing the greys appearing, noticing how my eyelids kinda sag and of course that I those extra unwanted kilos that have built up over the years! Suddenly, I was in my clients shoes and it’s kinda scary.

What will I wear? How will I pose? What if I hate all the shots cause I am feeling so chubby right now!  Anyway, I figured out what to wear!, and put trust into the photographer for guidance with posing and went about doing a crash course on loving myself for how I am!! haha!  Not easy at all!

But!,  by some kind of strange twist of fate this morning I happened across a blog about a woman who has suffered burns to over 80% of her body. I came across her blog because she had a photoshoot and I was admiring the images in Pinterest.  Amazing! here was this amazing woman who is basically missing most of her face & neck and I am freaking out about my shoot! I got over myself real darn fast! So what, I bet I will think I look chubby in my shots, but that’s me at the moment and I have to be brave… just like all my clients are! (hats off to you guys!) There’s much more to me than what I think of myself!

I will update this post when Steph has given me the images!  But for now, she has kindly processed a sneak peak… man I’m a meat-axe!! ha ha LOVE IT.

Thanks Steph for today, it was fun chatting and giggling the whole way through! You’re a star!

Right tee ho!! As promised here is the rest of my shoot! I feels so stange posting these!! I feel like Kath & Kim… Look-a-me!

You look radiant Nykie!! This is such a great shot as it really shows WHO YOU ARE. I love that you changed your outlook after reading the blog about the woman with burns. Sometimes it takes looking at someone else’s reflection (as you do all the time through your lens) to really see the beauty within us all……can’t wait to see the rest. You rock lady! xxx

I bet you were doing a typical family ‘snort giggle’ in this shot.

You are gorgeous Nykie! I know what you mean about ‘the extra kilos’ being an issue when considering having photos taken. I refused to let anyone take photos of me after the birth of both my boys because I felt like a big fatty and hated the way I looked. I have tried to ‘embrace the fat’ since the birth of my baby girl and just enjoy having photos with me in them, as I won’t be able to capture these special moments again. I think it’s great if the photographer is able to hide the no-so-desirable bits of the subject’s body and highlight the best bits!

Glad you blogged this, it’s important that we are as Steph has said “who we are” at our portraits. They have to reflect that time in our live when they were taken.
Here’s a link to nienie’s blog. I assume you were talking about her. http://nieniedialogues.blogspot.com/
She is an inspiration to many!

Fantastic photos Nyk. I especially love the first black and white shot. The others show your personality and joy but this one just shows you! If you know what I mean!!!
