Addressing the reasons people hesitate to book a shoot.

Recently I asked a lot of people “What holds you back from getting a family portrait session?”

Most people responded that it was a luxury that they just could not afford. Sure it can seem like an expensive outlay. But in my lounge my framed portraits that adorn the walls cost less than our lounge suite, less than the television and less than the laptop I am writing on now. I can tell you in a heartbeat, it’s the portraits I’d be devastated about loosing in a fire! I look at them, every-single-day and admire my beautiful family. To me good photography is of the highest importance. Despite being able to take fabulous images of my own kids, I still buy the kindy photos. Do you know why? because a stranger, and a professional photographer can get one heck of a smile from my kids! It’s priceless….

The next point people raised was they were concerned that their kids would misbehave on a shoot. I totally understand this fear, I used to avoid the supermarket for the same reasons! But let me ask you this… Have you ever seen your child behave badly when they are the centre of attention? Act a little silly maybe? but never naughty. I have photographed many kids in my time and I have never had one misbehave. The shy ones take a while to warm up… The gregarious ones can get a little crazy (which can render great photos!) but I have ways and means of bringing this all under control to “get the shot”. I have also photographed a few kids with Autism and other Special Needs, they all have their own quality’s and ways of letting me in to their world, even if it is just for 1/250th of a second.. which is all I need :) .

All we need to do is plan the shoot. Do it in a fun location, and the right time of the day! And all YOU need to do is rely on your photographer to coax the kids and make sure they are enjoying themselves.

A few Mums were honest with me and said they wouldn’t book a shoot right now because they are feeling unattractive at the moment. Some of us do take a few years to get back to feeling good about ourselves after having children. I totally get this as well. On all my shoots I encourage the Mum to wear some make up, even get it done for them! Maybe even treat themselves to getting their hair done as well. There are ways of concealing things they don’t like about their body through clothing or posing, but generally they are pleasantly surprised about how good they do look once they see the final shots. If you’re really not keen on hopping in front of the camera, myself and a lot of photographers will do sessions with ”Just The Kids”. But I will leave you with this thought, if you got some shots done now… in 5, 10 or 20 years from now you will look back and see that you were in fact young & attractive and you will never grow tired of seeing your lovely family portrait.

One last valid point made by some people was that they were too busy. The world’s gone a little mad hasn’t it? Or maybe it’s my age… but I, and most people I know are super busy. Your photographer should make allowances for this and book you well in advance so you can MAKE TIME! Even pencil you in for two dates in case of rain. (well that’s what I do). If it’s important to you, you’ll make it work.

All in all, I hope I have put some of you at ease. Pick up that phone, or boot up that computer and make contact with a photographer today. Hit them up for a consult and a coffee so you can meet and make sure they are a match for your family and of course, make sure you love their portfolio and style.

People dont value images. They may see the upfront cost and their hearts stop.

Once they have the images they will start to value them though.. The problem is its a big risk for someone to put money on the line not knowing what the end product actually is.

If you could show them the exact image they would be getting they would be more likely to buy as they have an emotional connection.

But it still doesnt work if you make the sitting cheap and then markup the image costs.. as then they think the sitting was easy (and thus anyone could have done it) and now you are trying to rip them off with what was an easy job.

      Its a catch 22.

Faith is the problem, they need to have complete faith in the photographer, and thats why those that have a good reputation survive.

Well written. Really hit home for me. Trying to shoot my own 4 kids (2 have left home) is so hard. I need to make more effort to get some family photos done.

Tis very true Kyle. I think it was Jasmine Star who said something like “Always shoot like it’s for a VIP”, as in, put in 100% every-single-time etc etc… then the referrals start coming in and that trust is there.

Great article Nyk!! You hit the nail on the head with so many points. So true about not feeling attractive now but then looking back and thinking “Hey, I looked pretty damn fine actually!!” I don’t know how many times I have done this…thinking I look like crap and then not even a year later seeing that I actually looked ok!!

So true about the kids too, a stranger can often get that little extra magic that a parent cannot!!

Well written, keep them coming!! Am enjoying your blog
